Christmas in Florence: magical lights, street markets and wonderful views

Experiencing the everyday life of a December day in Florence is just heart-warming. Despite the freezing air, Florence is even more fascinating in winter, and Christmas creates a more magical atmosphere.

In this period, there are many events in the main squares of the historic centre. In Piazza Santa Croce, you can wander around the Heidelberg Christmas market from December 3 to 21. It is a traditional street market where you can look for original gift ideas, Christmas decorations and Northern European food products. The market is open every day from 10am to 8pm.

Staying on the topic of markets, you can find a Scottish market in Piazza Santa Maria Novella from November 21 till January 4. This market is a long tradition and it testifies to the good relations between the city of Edinburgh and Florence. There you can find typical Scottish products such as Scottish traditional men’s and women’s wear, tea, spirits and much more. The market is open from 10am to 8pm.

Strolling along Borgo dei Greci street, you reach the heart of Florence: Piazza della Signoria. When the Christmas lights are put up, they create a unique atmosphere in this square. Piazza della Signoria has always been the stage of the main historical events in Florence. The best position to thoroughly admire the square is turning your back to the Café Rivoire and direct your glance first to the Perseus ans Medusa statue and then to the impressive statue of David, which seems to invite you to visit Palazzo Vecchio.

If you want to get out from the historical centre, we suggest you to go and shop at the fair Natale in Fortezza (Christmas in the Fortress). You can reach this Christmas market by driving your car or by taking a bus. There you can find local products, gift ideas and a children’s area where there are bouncy castles, workshops and activities for the little ones. It is open from December 11 to 14 from 11am to 8pm.

Last but not least, if you are interested in the traditional Florentine handicraft, don’t miss La Fierucola, the most authentic and charming street market. It is held in Piazza Santo Spirito on December 21, from 9am to 7pm. There you can find local products from the Tuscan countryside and even free workshops for your children.

Strolling around Santa Croce and San Niccolò districts is a fascinating experience, and you can admire a display of Christmas lights everywhere up to Via Calzaiuoli.
Don’t miss the breath-taking panorama of Florence from Piazzale Michelangelo, there you can spot the Duomo, the Giotto’s bell tower, the Palazzo Vecchio and the Lungarno, namely the streets bordering the river Arno.

You will run across plenty of Christmas decorations scattered around all the historic centre, small local handicraft markets and countless opportunities to enjoy Christmas in one of the most striking and beautiful cities of the world.
